Chamber pulls Taste of Worthington from menu

The Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce has decided not to bring back Taste of Worthington indefinitely.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to bring back Taste,” said Matt Lofy, chamber executive director.

“At the heart of our decision is that our restauranteurs are still struggling with work force and rising overhead costs. We need to work to support them, not ask more of them.”

Chamber leaders got a glimpse of this challenge for restaurants at its April 15 Reds, Whites & Desserts. The popular chamber fundraiser was well-attended again, but several traditional participants were unable to be present because they could not staff a booth to serve their product.

The chamber has hosted Taste of Worthington for two decades as one of its two large community events.

The other is Market Day, which is scheduled to take over historic Old Worthington this year on Saturday, Sept. 30. That daylong festival has taken place for more than 50 years.

Much like local businesses, the chamber has been in a much different place since Taste last was hosted in 2019. This decision comes as the chamber works to become stronger as an organization in a post-pandemic business climate.

“We are now an office of two since we last hosted Taste and that changes how we have to work as a chamber,” said Lofy.

“This decision allows us to identify more ways to increase our business resources that directly impact our area businesses first and in return contribute to a resilient economy for greater Worthington second.”
